ZMA® Maintains Healthy Testosterone Levels and Strength in Athletes
Back to Research
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, ZMA helped maintain muscle strength, functional power, zinc, magnesium, testosterone and IGF-I levels. Researchers at Western Washington University conducted a study of ZMA on 27 college football players during their spring football practice season to assess the effect of ZMA on anabolic hormones and muscle function. The football players took ZMA (the equivalent of 30 mg of zinc, 450 mg of magnesium and 10.5 mg vitamin B6) or a placebo nightly over an eight-week period. Zinc, magnesium, total and free testosterone, IGF-1, muscle strength and functional power were measured before and after the season. The placebo group decreased in zinc, magnesium, total and free testosterone and IGF-1 levels, demonstrating that these nutrients and anabolic hormones can be decreased after an intensive eight-week training program.
