PROTYKIN® PLUS GRAPE SEED EXTRACT FOUND TO PROMOTE WOUND HEALING

BENICIA, Calif., April 2, 2001 - InterHealth Nutraceuticals' Protykin®, a 200:1 standardized extract of Polygonum cuspidatum (root), and a grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSE), when taken in combination, significantly promotes the healing of skin wounds, according to a new human clinical study presented at the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) 2001 meeting in Orlando, Florida on April 1, 2001.

The human ex vivo study, conducted by researchers at The Ohio State University Medical Center (Columbus, OH) and the Creighton University School of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions (Omaha, NE), found that Protykin and GSE, in combination, facilitate tissue repair and regeneration. It was found that the combination of Protykin and GSE increases the levels of hydrogen peroxide at the wound site, which enhances the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). VEGF is key to the formation of new blood vessels that is necessary for wound healing and dermal health.

"These findings are important because rapid healing decreases the opportunity for infection," stated Dr. Chandan K. Sen of Ohio State University. "As we go forward it could also have significant implications for people recovering from surgery or for those with conditions, such as diabetes, which impair the ability of the body to heal its wounds."

Previous research has shown that Protykin, introduced by InterHealth in 1998, possesses significant antioxidant, antimutagenic, antibacterial and gastroprotectant properties. GSE was developed by InterHealth in 1997. Both GSE and Protykin are available in drug and health food stores as nutritional ingredients in a wide range or dietary supplements and nutraceutical food and beverage products.

InterHealth Nutraceuticals researches, develops, markets and distributes specialty nutritional ingredients, which are sold worldwide to manufacturers of dietary supplements and nutraceutical food and, beverage products. In addition to Protykin, InterHealth is the maker of CitriMax®, UC-II™, L-OptiZinc® and ChromeMate®.
