7 Steps for Developing Health & Fitness Resolutions

As their personal trainer, coach, or mentor, you will likely be part of the resolution-deciding process. This is a great opportunity to get a fresh start and work towards health and fitness goals in the new year. If you’re not sure where to start, continue reading for 7 steps for developing health and fitness resolutions

  1. Create manageable resolutions. The first step in developing health and fitness resolutions is to work with your client in finding something manageable. A huge part of many people abandoning their New Year’s resolution is because their goal was too lofty or there wasn’t an appropriate amount of time allotted to reach the goal. Talk through the ideas your client has for their resolutions and bring your own suggestions to the table as well. Together, you should be able to create manageable resolutions for the new year.
  2. Develop both tangible and intangible goals. Any resolution should have multiple goals attached to it. A key ingredient for success is being able to complete clear goals. Having both tangible and intangible goals is key, since there is often a lot going into a resolution. For example, losing 5 pounds is tangible and feeling more energetic is intangible, but no less important.
  3. Include regular check-ins. Depending on how often you meet with your client, this step will vary. Regular check-ins are important for maintaining accountability, but also for talking through both struggles and successes. Perhaps you meet in person monthly but have a phone meeting each week. If you have an online tracking system, that is great, but be sure to get in quality “face time” to foster conversation.
  4. Connect with another. While you are a main point of direction and encouragement for your client as they work toward keeping a resolution, it is important for them to have contact with a peer working toward a similar goal. If your clientele doesn’t allow for this, work with another in your field to make a match. Peer-to-peer accountability is strong and long-lasting.
  5. Keep the process aligned with the end goal. Many resolutions are ongoing, or are made up of several smaller goals. Be sure you are working with your client throughout the process to ensure that each step aligns with the larger goal.
  6. Be flexible. It is important to stay flexible throughout the entire process. Your client will likely have life events or other outside factors that could prompt a revisit to your plan. It is your responsibility to work with them during these instances to ensure a smooth and efficient transition.
  7. Celebrate success! As each goal is reached, no matter how big or small, take time with your client to celebrate! Work with them from the start to develop fun, engaging, and healthy items to include as part of the celebration. Encourage your client to celebrate with friends and family!
