A Beginner’s Guide to Supplement Packaging Design

An essential part of the success of a supplement is in the packaging design. At a time when we see beautiful and intelligent design for everything from writing utensils to big brand websites, it is important to not let your supplement product design fall on the backburner. Additionally, the health and supplement industry has grown so large so quickly that unique product packaging design becomes even more imperative. You’ve taken that extra step in ensuring the quality of your product but now it’s time to make sure consumers notice it on the shelf or the webpage.

Not sure where to start? Don’t worry! Here are a few points to start with and to keep in mind as you work with your design team to create the best packaging design for your supplement product.

  • Value. Consumer behavior is often dictated by perceived value. This can be communicated in several ways and is an important consideration as you design your supplement packaging. How do you want your customers to perceive your product? What kind of value is it providing in their lives and for their health? Are you providing a luxury product or an everyday product? Asking these questions and others like them will help you make decisions about next steps in your packaging design.
  • Individuality. As mentioned above, you want to ensure your product stands out from the crowd. There are several ways to do this, with no best answer for everyone but only the best answer for your product. Does your product work with non-traditional packaging? Is your color palette flexible with your branding standards? Are there popular design trends that might help you stand out? On the flip side, does it work better for your product to play to the mellower design in order to stand out? Dive into this aspect with your team to decide what unique and intriguing way you can set your product apart.
  • Branding. All things considered, your brand should be apparent in the packaging design. There are many ways this can be done, from logo placement and color choice to font and image choices, among other design elements. Also, if you are working with another brand, manufacturer, etc. in the creation of your product, you have their branding to consider as well.
  • Content. What you say and how you say it should be carefully considered when designing your supplement packaging. Ideally, your graphic and written content should be simple, easy to understand, and informative. Consumers are savvy and want honest and simple information on products. When you are considering what content you want to include, think about what you would want to know about your product before buying. What are the facts? What will catch the eye and pique interest? What non-essentials can be left out? Start with these questions as you determine the best content to include on your supplement packaging.
