Listening is key, especially if you have a new client or haven’t seen someone in a while. When you listen, you create a safe environment for your client to be heard and allow them to build trust in you. This is important to cultivate a healthy, comfortable relationship with each other, so neither of you feel too stressed right off the bat. Pay special attention to their needs and desires. If you have seen them before, their goals or expectations may have changed. It may sound basic, but simply making eye contact with your clients when listening will encourage them to be open and honest with you, and in return will make the best use of your time.

Try to keep an open mind when talking to clients. Make sure to listen to all they have to say before offering any advice so you know that you have the full picture. Knowing the goals, challenges, and strengths of each of your clients will be valuable.

Ask Questions

When the client is done talking, don’t rush to offer advice. Instead, offer insightful questions to help motivate your client to think and take actions on their own and to understand their needs. Use words like “what” and “how” for a more comforting tone. For example “Why do you want to lose 10 pounds?” is a question that is often asked. But asking “How do you want to lose 10 pounds?” will draw out the positives of how the client thinks they can succeed.


When working with a weight loss client, it becomes necessary to give good advice. Remember to never command or correct the client, rather coach objectively. The client will always have the ability to do what they want, so let them take your advice at their own pace. Then, they have the opportunity to become comfortable with your recommendations.
