Encouraging Clients’ Fitness Resolution

Take a step into any gym this time of year and you’ll know it’s New Year’s resolution season. Setting a fitness resolution is one thing, but sticking with it can be a challenge of its own. As a personal trainer, helping your clients succeed in their fitness resolutions can be tough, but the success stories should be considered a badge of honor. Here are a few tips to help encourage your clients’ fitness resolutions.

  • Encourage a reasonable, quantifiable goal. By this time of year, people have already set fitness goals for 2016 and some of them may have bit off more than they can chew. Sit down with your client and assess their resolutions. Encourage a reasonable goal that is measurable in one way or another. Setting a measurable fitness goal will help your client keep an objective record of their progress. Ask questions to learn about their background and lifestyle to ensure that their goals are obtainable.
  • Divide the goal into checkpoints. Now that you’ve learned about your client’s objective for the year, it’s time to get a bit creative. By breaking a large goal into some small, manageable goals, it’s much easier for the client to stay focused and motivated in the long run. For example, if your client wishes to lose 20 pounds this year, make a goal to lose 2 pounds per month.
  • Educate on fitness cornerstones. Fitness is more than hitting the gym. Explain the importance of living a healthy lifestyle in and out of the fitness center. Encourage healthy habits for nutrition, physical activity, sleeping, and hydration.
  • Create a manageable plan. As a personal trainer, your goal is to help get the best results out of each client. No two people are exactly same. Goals are different, fitness levels are different, and you’re going to have to adapt to each person you train. Create a plan for your client that won’t spook them from wanting to continue. Many people may lose interest if a plan is too challenging at first. Avoid this by trying more of an escalated approach where things are easy at first, and gradually become more difficult.
  • Promote record keeping. The best way to see where you’re headed is to know where you’ve been. Ask your clients to keep an accurate record of their daily nutrition and activity, in addition to weekly weigh-in results to see their progress over time. Having physical evidence of their progress is the best motivator you could have.
  • Check in and cheer on. Take a minute to check in on clients throughout the week whether it be when you see them at the gym or via email. The effort will help your client feel supported and held accountable.
