Help Your Clients With Summertime Skin Health

Can you believe that summer has almost arrived?! As the sun shines down, the number of opportunities to get outside and play goes up. That may mean fewer clients in your clinic, gym, or other health establishment, but it also means new opportunities to encourage better health and lifestyle habits.

Start by educating your patrons on optimal summer skin care principles:

  • Apply sunscreen every time you plan to be outside more than 30 minutes, regardless of cloud or tree cover.
  • Utilize sunscreen with at least 30 SPF. SPF is an indication of how well the substance filters UVB rays; the kind that make you burn.
  • UVA is just as important as UVB. Choose a sunscreen with ‘broad-spectrum protection’ or ‘UVA/UVB’ on the label.
  • An 8 oz. bottle of sunscreen is only good for about 8 uses of head-to-toe coverage. Don’t skimp! Instead, be prepared with multiple bottles.
  • Remember to reapply after swimming or an hour of heavy sweating.
  • Sunglasses prevent basal cell cancer on the eyelids and reduce the risk of macular degeneration, which leads to blindness.
  • One indoor tanning session increases carcinoma risk by 67%.
  • When wearing a swimsuit or an outfit that exposes a lot of skin, drape a lighter layer over the top. Darker cloth with a tighter weave is more effective.

In addition to these principles, it’s recommended to see a dermatologist annually for a skin check as well as administer monthly self-examinations. Anyone who has a family history of skin cancer, new moles or skin discoloration, or has used a tanning bed should inform their doctor. If caught early, most skin cancers or other concerns caused by the sun can be easily treated by a healthcare professional.
About 86% of melanoma (skin cancer) cases result from exposure to UV rays. Stress this fact with your clients when you encourage them to get out and be active. Consider giving a free class or distributing a newsletter with this information. At the end of the class or newsletter, you can talk about reversing the effects of aging on their skin and recommend Protykin®. Protykin® is a natural extract that has been studied extensively for its healthy-aging benefits. It has a multitude of antioxidants and mimics calorie restriction, which is thought to lead to a longer life. To inquire further, call and talk to an Interhealth representative at 1-800-783-4636.
