Helping Patients Prep For Fall Allergies

Respiratory health is a growing concern for people all over the world. Seasonal allergies are commonly associated with spring, however, many people suffer from mold, ragweed, and other allergies after a long summer. With fall right around the corner, it’s time to think about what can be done to help minimize discomfort this allergy season. Here are a few suggestions for your patients with allergies this fall.

  • Use a dehumidifier. Certain allergens like mold and dust thrive in a humid atmosphere. Dehumidifiers can drastically help improve air quality in the home by removing excess moisture, thus reducing these allergens.
  • Keep the house clean. A clean house is good for many reasons. For people struggling with seasonal allergies, a clean house can be a breath of fresh air, literally. Suggest to your patients that they regularly vacuum and dust their home to help improve air quality.
  • Keep an eye on the news. The local news will often discuss air quality which may seem trivial to many, but it is invaluable to people with allergies. Knowing what to expect can help your patient adjust their daily routine to make their everyday life as comfortable as possible.
  • Wash the bedding often. Sheets and comforters can harbor loads of dust, which can disrupt breathing when trying to sleep.
  • Change the air filter. Many people forget or simply don’t care to swap out an air filter every few months, but it can make a significant improvement to the air quality in the house. If the air filter is filthy, it can restrict airflow in the house or may be just circulating dirty air throughout the home.
  • Close up the house. If the outdoor air quality is poor, close up the house and utilize air conditioning or fans to keep the house cool and air circulating.
  • Open up the house. Conversely, if the air quality within the home is subpar but it’s nice outdoors, have your patient open up the house for a few hours to air it out and get some fresh air indoors.
