How to Build Success for Your Personal Training Business

Personal trainer with clientBuilding a successful personal training business is no easy task. The health and fitness field is growing by leaps and bounds, with more and more people getting involved. This is great news, since we all want health and wellness for others, but it can make operating small businesses in the field a challenge. You are the expert, and your team of personal trainers are here to do great work for your clients and build a thriving business. If you are hitting a roadblock or are at the beginning stages of building your business, take a look at these suggestions to help bring you to the top:

  • Become the ultimate source of knowledge for your clients. This may seem like a given, but we mean for you to dive even deeper. It’s really important for your clients to be able to come to you for confirmation or debunking of something they learned from another source. To be prepared, read popular publications in addition to professional journals. Keep up with all of the trends and fads and do your research on anything you don’t already know. When clients trust your expertise, they stick around and tell their friends.
  • Engage your clients beyond the gym. You may have had an uplifting and productive session with your client, but then they go home and live their lives. Depending on the frequency of your sessions, clients can quickly forget progress made. To combat this, end sessions with something your client can take with them, so to speak. Be it a little ‘homework’ (i.e. stretches, simple exercises) or a long-term project such as a food journal that you discuss together. This allows for your sessions to stick more, engaging your clients more than just during your session in the gym.
  • Market yourself! Sure, you may have the standard marketing materials; website, flyers, maybe even social media or local advertising. But, you need to be a walking advertisement for your personal training business. Suit up your team and yourself with branded gear for both in and outside the gym. Also, advertise online. While you likely have social media pages already, you should capitalize on the momentum online with a robust advertising campaign. The sky is the limit!
  • Actively avoid burnout. It is all too easy to think that burnout won’t happen to you or to anyone on your amazing team, but it can. Be proactive and set reasonable hours, especially as the owner or manager. Nothing sabotages the success of a business like burnout.
