There is no single “ideal weight” that applies to every person. We each have a different biological makeup, bone structure, height, and goals. And yet helping clients understand this basic truth can be tough. Everyone desires the easy answer, the simple solution. If there were a universal ideal weight, there would also be a universal ideal way to lose weight.
This discrepancy in perception versus reality should be addressed on the onset of each new client. Sit down and help them analyze which tools to avoid and a potential framework for losing the weight they want to see gone.
The BMI Isn’t Enough
BMI (Body Mass Index) has historically been utilized by many health professionals to help clients approach a “healthy” weight, but the index is actually more of a tool for scientists assessing population health statistics. A “healthy” BMI may have range that indicates a person can fluctuate as much as 30% in body weight. There’s no case in which a 30% shift in weight doesn’t have a negative impact, especially when it’s a fast shift.
The shortcomings of BMI come from not taking aspects like gender, frame, etc. into account. It also fails when it comes to factoring any extremes in height, weight, or muscle mass.
The Scale Isn’t Enough
BMI takes both weight and height into consideration. The scale only measures weight. Therefore, it’s even less effective in being a tool for those seeking long term weight loss or a health boost. Moreover, it can be discouraging and produce feelings of doubt or failure. To find success, your clients must avoid using the scale as the main means of measurement!
A Personalized Framework for Weight Loss
Being healthier and losing weight start with a feeling. Clients should be encouraged to set small goals to start. This way, each small goal that is reached will be inspiring and propel other goals forward.
Work with your client on the three legs of a healthy framework: preparation, routine, and reward. Clients should design a meal plan each week and dedicate themselves to 1) cooking well-rounded meals and 2) exercising regularly. Each person will face different challenges, so make sure you act as a judgement-free source of insight and help tweak the routine until it continues smoothly on its own.
The reward will come naturally in the form of feeling great! A client that does everything he or she can to be healthy for several months is a client that has essentially reached their “ideal weight.”
