Improve Your Client’s Sports Performance

As a personal trainer, it’s likely that you receive questions regularly about how to improve performance for amateur and professional athletes. While everyone has their own routine or rituals, it’s important to keep a few things in mind and encourage your clients to do the same. Here are a few tips to improve your client’s sports performance.

  • Train for success. As a professional trainer, you understand the importance of training. We’ve all heard the phrase “practice makes perfect.” While it’s nearly impossible to deliver a picture-perfect performance for any given race or sporting event, you can help set your clients up for success by putting them on a strict training schedule. Depending on the activity and how much time your client has to train, your plan could make a substantial difference in your client’s success.
  • Rest like an athlete. Train hard, rest hard. Rest and recovery play a crucial role is any training plan. Encourage your client to take “active recovery” days to help prevent injury during training season.
  • Fuel the body. Cutting out excess sugary foods and beverages is important, but feeding the body wholesome foods and proper hydration is crucial. Suggest that your client increases their intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while reducing processed carbohydrates and sugars.
  • Keep a journal. The best way to stay on track and stay motivated is by maintaining a record of everything. A journal of your clients activity, progress, food intake, struggles, and sleep can help explain what is working and what is not.   • Replenish electrolytes after activity. During periods of activity, regardless of duration, you expel loads of energy. And your body needs to be replenished. Over-hydrating can cause you to feel ill, but failing to refuel can be detrimental.  
  • Refrain from trying anything new on the big day. Getting into a rhythm to be as efficient as possible for the big race or event is what training is all about. Trying something new on the day of the event can throw everything off. Explain to your client that consistency is incredibly important to avoid injury or any other issue.
  • Keep variables in mind. While things like nutrition, pacing, and hydration are typically things that can be controlled, it’s important to remember variables that are out of our control. Things like wind, temperature, humidity, rain, and other conditions specific to the event type can all play a part in an athlete’s performance. Encourage your client to make a game plan for any situation or variable that may arise. Preparation can make any situation much more manageable.
