Improving Patient Respiratory Health

Spring has sprung, and for many people, that means allergies and difficulty with breathing. Talking with your patients and suggesting changes can drastically improve their breathing and quality of life. Here are a few tips to get your patients down the path to better respiratory health.

  • Get tested for allergies. A great place to start for anyone dealing with respiratory issues is getting tested for allergies. The results will give you and your patient a better understanding of what could be causing the issues.
  • Pay attention to the news and weather. Once an allergy test has been taken, it’s much easier to get an idea of how the weather affects the individual’s respiratory health. Local weather reports will often share the levels of outdoor allergens such as pollen and mold. If your patient shows allergy symptoms to these, mention to them that they should keep an eye on weather reports to help anticipate the conditions.
  • Wear a mask during certain tasks. Attempting to perform lawn maintenance or standard household chores can be very uncomfortable for people with respiratory difficulties. Wearing a mask during these activities may help block allergens.
  • Regularly clean the house. When people think of allergies, they often only consider elements outside of the home. The truth is, most homes harbor dust and allergens that can trigger respiratory issues, even for people without known allergies. Keeping a clean living space by regularly tidying up belongings, dusting, and vacuuming can make a vast improvement in the air quality inside the home.
  • Change clothes after being outside. The clothes we wear can carry the elements from our daily activity into our homes. Removing shoes and changing clothes after coming home for the day can reduce the outdoor allergens from floating around the house. Clothes should be placed in a closed clothes hamper to keep it contained.
  • Adjust the windows accordingly. If the respiratory issues are worse outdoors, close the windows! Conversely, if your patient expresses that breathing is more difficult in the home or workplace, suggest that they open windows to increase airflow.
  • Try an air purifier. Many people find an air purifier in the home to be useful in helping to improve air quality and reduce allergens in the home. And when the air quality is better, it’s likely that your client will find his or her respiratory health to be improved.
