Instructing Your Patients: The Detox Diet

If you run a clinic, gym, or health facility, chances are high that you’ve had a patient approach you to ask for advice. How much exercise will get me to lose 20 lbs? Can I eat pizza and still get thin? What’s the best workout to tone my arms? There are hundreds upon thousands of deviations from questions like these, all seeking insight and experience. You hold the key to helping your patients make positive life changes and be healthier overall.

One of the most difficult parts of keeping your patients on track with their goals is debunking the many health and weight loss myths out there on the internet. Some of the myths prey on the feelings of doubt or guilt your patients feel after straying from an exercise regimen or diet, perhaps due to a vacation or holiday. This kind of mistake can trigger an extreme response such as starvation or prolonged detoxing, which actually sets your patients back much farther than the original poor health decision.

If your patient encounters a moment of weakness, help them get back on track by:

  1. Assuring them that mistakes happen and encouraging them not to moralize their food choices. Indulging in delicious food is not inherently bad, nor does it make them weak. Therefore, they do not need to do anything good to make up for it. They simply must refocus and follow the original exercise and diet plan.
  2. Pointing them toward a safe detox diet if they feel the need to switch or intensify a health regimen. While some types of detox programs can be beneficial, not all of them are healthy or safe; it’s easy for patients to become confused and not be able to distinguish them.

So, what kinds of detox diets are safe? Detoxing is safe when the patient continues to eat and exercise. The types of food may change slightly, ie incorporating more greens. But ultimately a healthy detox comes from supporting the body in its natural detoxing abilities.

Next time a patient goes on vacation or comes back from holiday, emphasize natural detoxing by being more strict about the plans and good habits you’ve already helped them set in motion. No cheating! After all, a good diet and exercise program will have a little room for indulgences built in.
