Maximizing Client Fitness Results

As a personal trainer, helping clients get the most out of their fitness is the name of the game. Through the winter months, many people will be heading to fitness facilities to work on their fitness and stay active. But what is the best approach to helping clients maximize results? Here’s what we recommend.

  • Determine your client’s goals. If it is your first session with your client, it’s likely that they will be eager to dive right in. It is important, however, to first define their fitness goals and expectations. If a goal seems completely unrealistic, don’t be afraid to guide them toward a more attainable goal. Ambition is a great thing to have, but unrealistic goals can be discouraging down the road. Conversely, don’t be shy in trying to motivate clients to reach ambitious goals if they seem reasonable.
  • Educate your client on the value of nutrition. Now that your client has a goal to work toward, the next step is determining how to get there. As a personal trainer, you know that even more than physical activity, nutrition plays a vital role in physical fitness. Ask them about their current diet regimen, and explain the importance of a balanced diet consisting of wholesome foods.
  • Design the right training plan for the client. With the groundwork laid, it is now time to create a plan for the client. Things to initially consider are fitness goals, current fitness level, available time to devote to activity, any history of injury. Start the client with a manageable plan, with challenges and milestones along the way.
  • Encourage detailed record keeping. Jumping into a new fitness routine can be challenging for many people, which is why many people fall off track within the first two weeks. A fitness journal is a fantastic way to help clients to track their progress and stay focused. Encourage your client to keep track of everything related to the plan including all physical activity, nutrition, hydration, weight, measurements, and overall mood.
  • Check in with your client. Regardless if your client is ongoing or just for a few sessions, checking in with them periodically to ask about their progress can help them stay motivated. It also gives them a chance to ask questions or even sign up for more sessions which is good for everyone.

Helping clients get the most out of their training can help change their lives and also set you apart from other personal trainers in your area. We also recommend ZMA® to help your clients increase muscle strength and reach their personal fitness goals. Learn more about ZMA® on our website or by calling 1-800-783-4636.
