Personal Trainers: Help Achieve Results

It’s that time of year where people everywhere are looking to get in better shape. Personal trainers are needed everywhere, and the good ones can make a huge difference in people’s lives. Here are a few tips to help achieve the best results for your clients!

  • Educate yourself. Before you can properly train anyone, you need to educate yourself as a personal trainer. Take the appropriate classes and become certified, do additional research on nutrition, and absorb information any chance you get.
  • Educate the client. A vital part to your training sessions will be educating your clients as to why you are doing certain things. Why is it important to eat protein after a workout? Why should I be doing cardio? These are questions that you will frequently hear and you will want to be able to provide valuable knowledge.
  • Talk the talk. Take the time during your initial consultation to learn about your client’s specific goals. Discuss options and how much commitment each option will take. If you feel their goals may be unrealistic, don’t be afraid to be straightforward with them. It’s important it set realistic expectations to keep the client motivated and avoid any letdowns.
  • Bend the rules. A training plan isn’t black and white. If two clients share the same goals, their training plans may differ because of their age or fitness level. Don’t be afraid to change things up from time to time.
  • Walk the walk. Talking is important, but now it’s time to go through the physical motions of training with your clients. Set up a daily or weekly training schedule and use your sessions to get the most out of your time. Clients will be happy when they see results based on the dedicated time and effort you put in together.
  • Challenge. Use your best judgement to challenge clients to go the extra mile or hit one more set. Keep in mind, however, that everyone is at a different place in their fitness journey. What may be easy for you, may not be for them, but if you see the potential for them to improve, see if they’re up for the challenge.
  • Adjust. Listen to the people you train. Training plans are not always pass or fail. If your client is excelling or having issues with part of the plan, adjust accordingly. Training should always be a challenge to push the client, but finding the right balance is key.
  • Practice what you preach. It’s important to keep your personal nutrition and fitness in check. Keep up with your personal fitness to show clients that you take it seriously.
