Promote Wellness in the Workplace

If you are like most people, you spend more time at the workplace than anywhere else. The long hours mixed with interaction with your coworkers and employees can take a toll on your immune system, especially during the winter months. Here are a few tips to promote wellness in the workplace!

  • Education. First and foremost, one of the best ways to keep your workplace happy and healthy is by educating the employees in your office. Send out a bi-monthly or monthly office memo with tips on how to stay healthy. Remind employees of the importance of washing their hands and not attending the workplace if they are sick.
  • Preventative Care. A good offense is the best defense. Encourage your employees to see a doctor for yearly exams or a simple check up if they are feeling like they may be catching an illness. Staying on top of things can keep the whole office healthy!
  • Encourage Exercise. Studies show that normal physical activity can help promote a healthier immune system. Encourage your employees to step away from the desk during breaks and go for a walk, start a weekly office activity after-hours and encourage people to come out and have fun.
  • Incentives. While you can’t force people to work out, you can encourage healthy activity with incentives! If you have enough people interested, try an incentive program where people track their physical activity minutes for the month and get rewarded based on their activity. There are even apps that can help keep everyone motivated!
  • Allow Sick Days. Many businesses offer paid vacation time but don’t offer separate time off for sick days. The issue is that many people would rather go to work when they’re sick, instead of sacrificing their valuable vacation days. Show the office that you care by offering sick days, or work-from-home days when they are feeling under the weather, This will not only keep your sick employee happy but also keep the rest of your office healthy!
  • Healthy Food. We’ve all heard the phrase, “you are what you eat.” While you may not physically turn into an apple, eating one every day can help stay healthy. Offer healthy foods in your office whether it be in a vending machine, a fruit basket, or healthy company lunches to keep your employees at the top of their game.

When you spend over 40 hours per week at the workplace, it’s important that everyone stays healthy, especially through the winter season.
