Tips to Keep Your Client’s Joints Healthy

When it comes to health and wellness, joint health can play a significant role in our comfort and ability to be active. For personal trainers, it’s important to acknowledge when your clients express concerns regarding their joint comfort so you can adjust their fitness plan accordingly. Here are a few tips to improve your client’s comfort and help maintain joint health.

  • healthy_jointsDrink Water. Most people don’t drink nearly enough water although it is one of the most essential pieces of good health. In addition to keeping internal organs running as they should, water provides joints with lubricant and nourishment to keep them healthy. Suggest to your clients that they always carry a reusable bottle and sip water throughout the entire day. Strive for 64 ounces per day.
  • Low-Impact Fitness. It’s no secret that people with joint discomfort may not enjoy most cardiovascular activity because of the impact. Suggest to your clients activities that require less impact such as swimming, aqua aerobics, cycling, elliptical, or yoga. Activities like these still offer excellent physical benefits without the harsh impact of other activities such as running.
  • Stretch. Helping your clients stay flexible may also help with their joint comfort. Walk them through a variety of stretches, especially types of stretches that incorporate movement of any joints that experience occasional discomfort.
  • Encourage Regular Motion. Getting active in the gym can help with joint health and comfort, but then what happens the rest of the day? Most people spend the majority of the day sitting behind a desk with minimal activity. It’s important to make sure that your client understands that movement throughout the course of the day can help keep their joints and muscles from becoming stiff. Recommend that they stand up and stretch their legs every hour, and take short walks during their break.
